1. Engine parts functionality
One of the basic stuff that every deck officer must know is the principle of how an engine works. This is easy to understand because everybody has studied physics in a four-stroke diesel engine, do engine operates in four stages.
The first stage has a piston moving down that pulls in the air into the ignition chamber. The second stage consists of a piston moving upward that compresses the air which allows the air temperature to increase and build pressure inside the combustion chamber. The third stage also called the power stroke is where the fuel gets ignited in order to produce the power that pushes the Piston downwards. The Fourth Stage involves the throwing out of exhaust gas that are formed due to inertia.
2. Engine Air starting system
As already discussed, there are different stages of running an all data continued process engine. All this is a continuous process until we cut off the fuel supply. Two initially burn the fuel the Piston has to be moved upward and compress the fuel mixture the Piston cannot do this on its own therefore a starting air system is used.
The starting air is provided from the air bottle which is filled by the main air compressor. Start the engine, there is a minimum pressure of air that is required. In case the bottle pressure drops below the minimum level the engine will not be able to start and you will have to wait until the bottle is filled again.
A Marine engineer burns fuel to generate heat energy. This heat energy helps to rotate the propeller with help of a shaft.
The shaft and the propeller would turn faster when more fuel is burnt. Fuel can only burn in the presence of sufficient amount of air. It has to be noted that if the engine is filled with a large amount of fuel with no presence of air, there will be a lot of unburnt fuel left in the ship.
