A contemporary of one of the most recognisable structures in the world, The Eiffel Tower – Fermob has become synonymous with the French Art de Vivre. Now seen in some of the most iconic locations across the world - the Majorelle Gardens in Marrakech, Times Square, Bryant Park, the High Line and Madison Square in New York, the Museum of California in Oakland, the Louis Vuitton shop in Singapore – Fermob stands for fun, colourful and attractive pieces of furniture, which can breathe creative life into any space.
In the four corners of the world, you will find a little bit of France signed by Fermob
At a time, when iron was only used for the purpose of ornamentation - a craftsman who owned a small iron workshop in Thoissey, France had the idea of diversifying his business. From someone who specialised in designing scroll for a portal or a cross, he ventured to create wrought iron scrollwork for chair backs. It was a small step, yet it led to the creation of something that is nothing short of a "classic" today.
In 1950s, his son – an arts and crafts graduate – saw tremendous opportunity in what his father had started. After that, all that was required was to move the small craftsman’s workshop up a notch to industrialise it and mechanize the manufacture of garden furniture. And so the 1900 range was born!
In 1989, Bernard Reybier took over Fermob, and re-invented the codes of outdoor furniture, combining metal, design and colour to create top quality furniture that is mobile, functional, durable and fun.
Our furniture is timeless and elegant, yet tough, practical and carefully designed. All Fermob's furniture is designed for outdoors, and is fully weather-resistant.
Being a company that caters to the outdoors, our love for the environment is but natural. We were quick to incorporate sustainable development into our designs. Our furniture, too, is made up of recycled metal, solvent-free paint, recyclable Outdoor Technical Fabric and packaging treatments - all of which help reduce the environmental impact of our production lines. All this has made Fermob ISO 14001 certified since March 2010.
Bistro Metal Chair: An icon that took the world by storm
Created in late 19th Century, it was first seen adorning the open air cafes along the banks of the Seine. Its exceptional metalwork and collapsible design made it a definite favourite with lemonade-sellers of the time – who used these instead of paying for and acquiring a permanent spot on the terrace. It was also popular amongst their customers, engineers and artists for its typical French style.
Sleek, functional and non-flamboyant, stylistically this chair was way ahead of its time, and was in-sync with what later came to be known as the classic-minimalist style.
Now, even after 125 years since it was first made, the chair has not lost its sheen. As far as metal bistro chairs go, this is the icon.
