We start with Frieze New York. Launched in London in 1991 as a magazine founded by Amanda Sharp, Matthew Slotover, and Tom Gidley, it became one of the most influential contemporary art fairs in the world. Having made its debut as an art fair in London in 2003, Frieze New York was introduced in 2012 and takes place on Randall Island each May. This year, Frieze Sculpture takes on the Rockefeller Center with a free outdoor display that will continue through the end of June, highlighting the work of 14 international artists-- among them, Nick Cave, who collaborated with Ippolita on her series of limited edition charms for the Brooklyn Museum.
Some of the installations are done by Los Angeles-based artist Lauren Halsey, this year’s recipient of the Frieze Artist Award, who has created an architectural piece in which columns with carved surfaces evoke ruins seemingly imported from the future, paying homage to marginalized communities and suggesting possibilities for alternate futures.

This is also an exciting time for Ippolita, who has always been a champion of the arts, first as sculptor and jewelry maker and then as art patron. In May she celebrates art and particularly, sculpture, supporting the the first public viewing of a never before seen sculpture by JAGO. This virtuoso Italian artist will present a piece inspired by a statue from his native Napoli, the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino (1753) in the Cappella Sansevero. JAGO’s Veiled Son is a modern masterpiece made in New York using Vermont marble. May 10th at the Highline Stages (441 W 14th Street) in Manhattan will be the only chance to see it live before the piece is transferred to Napoli where it will be showcased in a square and then remain under the permanent patronage of Madre Museo in Italy.
Beyond Frieze New York, the iconic Park Avenue Armory is hosting the annual TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) New York Spring show which will last until May 7th. Established in 1988, TEFAF is the world’s preeminent organization for contemporary art, antiques, and design. This year 90 exhibitors, including powerhouse galleries like Acquavella, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Lisson, Victoria Miro, David Zwirner, Pace, and White Cube, will be present, while exciting lectures on art and the art market will take place throughout the week.
During Art Week we also saw: 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, presenting 24 galleries, with installations and lectures dedicated to contemporary art from Africa; Art New York at Pier 94, with 70 galleries showing work by some 300 artists including an exhibition curated by the New York Academy’s David Kartz; the Contemporary and Digital Art Fair, showcasing immersive installations, videos, and virtual-reality experiences; Moniker International Art Fair at 718 Broadway, with 28 international exhibitors taking up the theme of “Cause & Effect;” Object & Thing at 99 Scott Avenue in Brooklyn, a new art and design fair founded by Abby Bangser, the former artistic director of Frieze Art Fairs for the Americas and Asia, with 32 galleries organized in a unified exhibition; The Other Art Fair at the Brooklyn Expo Center, with 130 emerging international artists “for a new generation of buyers”; and finally, the Superfine! Art Fair at 107 Grand Street in SoHo with a focus on queer art.
