Unlocking Your Body's Potential to Live Healthier Longer
We've teamed up with Elysium Health to change how you age.
With so many breakthroughs in the news, how do you know which ones matter? Good Housekeeping is here to help! Our new Innovation Emblem recognizes the trailblazing initiatives, companies and services that push boundaries and raise the bar to benefit you and your family. GH is proud to award the firstInnovation Emblem to Elysium Health, a company that brings new levels of scientific rigor and research to the health and wellness industry and helps move the conversation in preventive health forward.
The scientists at Elysium Health have developed a clinically evaluated supplement called Basis, designed to boost cellular well-being. We’ve teamed up with them to share what this simple change to your morning routine could mean for you and the future of how we all age.
How do our Bodies Age?
It's key to understand the science behind the changes you see and feel. As we age, our cells start to slow down and don’t produce as much energy. They also can’t regenerate as quickly, making it harder to bounce back from all the things life throws our way. On the outside, our hair becomes thinner, and its growth moves in slo-mo. Skin loses elasticity when the collagen and elastin that hold it up start to breakdown, meaning it won’t look as plump or as smooth as it used to. The good news? A healthy lifestyle can have a major impact on how we age, though there are still aspects we can’t control. But scientists are delving into aging on a molecular level, with exciting potential for all of us.
NAD+: An Essential Molecule
One of the most exciting breakthroughs in the science of aging has focused on a compound called NAD+, which is in all living cells and is critical for life. Our bodies use this coenzyme to power hundreds of metabolic processes, and preclinical research suggests it has the potential to keep our cells healthier longer. Just some of the things NAD+ helps with:
Our bodies have built-in processes for fixing DNA errors, and these systems need the do-it-all coenzyme in order to work.
It’s key in making ATP, the source of energy production and metabolism in cells.
NAD+ plays a critical role in sleep-and-wake cycles in ways researchers are just beginning to suss out.
Discovery Meets Innovation
So, NAD+ is a superstar compound. However, there’s a catch: While all cells need it to stay healthy, NAD+ levels decline naturally with age. But new research shows there may be ways to increase levels after they’ve fallen.
Some of today’s smartest minds are working to harness our bodies’ anti-aging potential. For 30 years, Dr. Leonard Guarente, director of MIT’s Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research, has been studying genes that control aging. His discovery that NAD+ activates a family of proteins called sirtuins, which support health in the face of stress and aging, was the catalyst to co-founding Elysium Health — and led to the development of a revolutionary new supplement, Basis. Elysium’s research has since confirmed that Basis increases levels of NAD+ in our cells. Dr. Guarente and more than 20 other scientists (including eight Nobel laureates) on Elysium’s Advisory Board continue to innovate health and longevity research.
RAISING THE BAR
Elysium is working with top universities (such as Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford) on clinical studies and other research, including those that focus on:
Declining NAD+ levels may throw off our body clocks. Getting to youthful levels could lead to better zzz’s.
Restored NAD+ levels could also improve the look and condition of skin.
Elysium is supporting a research project at Harvard to examine how the gut microbiome influences levels of NAD+ in the body.
The Clinical Research Behind Basis
In an eight-week clinical study, 60- to 80-year-olds taking Basis as directed increased their NAD+ levels by an average of 40% and sustained their NAD+ levels for the duration of the trial.
Elysium is committed to manufacturing using FDA standards with the highest-purity ingredients.
Elysium Health’s product development is driven by robust research. In order to provide the greatest benefit to consumers like you, Elysium performs scientifically stringent trials focused on efficacy and safety for all of its products.
