We are passionate about creating beautiful, original designs which are underpinned with functionality. We have an eclectic taste and this shows through in the varying aesthetics of our different ranges. We design in house, but also collaborate with the most talented designers worldwide, bringing the finest products to market.
Dan Black and Martin Blum met while studying industrial design at Northumbria University. In 1998, not long after graduating, they formed black+blum. Although the company started as a consultancy, their passion lay in developing and selling their own designs and they launched their first range of lighting in 2000. The range quickly grew and they entered the homeware market in 2002, with the launch of their iconic James the doorman.
Other award winning designs followed swiftly, with the propello fan, loop candelabra and Box appetit lunchbox. The designs were adventurous in diversity of category and aesthetic, but always consistently underpinned with function and fun. In 2014 Dan took over the reins of the organisation and steered black+blum into becoming the design house behind several homeware ranges, with each one having its own individual category and recognisable aesthetic.
The Iconic Oxo Tower
Our studio is in the Oxo Tower, which is situated in central London next to the Thames. London is a melting pot of design cultures and being in the heart of the city, allows us to take advantage of these influences.
The Oxo Tower has two floors of creative studio space and is home to many different creative companies. This includes fashion, graphic, jewellery, ceramics, lighting and product designers. It’s like being part of a big creative family, where everyone knows each other and is able to draw on the different expertise of each company.
The black + blum office combines working studio and shop. You can see us working on new designs, meet the team and buy products. We're open Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and Saturday (Saturday is by appointment only).
Whenever we design a product, we always have a benchmark that it should be worthy of winning a design award. We have won over 25 international design awards and many of our designs are in permanent collections of internationally renowned design museums.
