Michael O'Neal

Michael was born and raised in New York, where he studied graphic design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. New York City was his campus and he grew up fast, absorbing all of the art, design, and music he could get his hands on. After school, Michael worked in advertising where he began developing print and TV campaigns for a range of clients including Citibank, Hennessy, IFC, Nautica, Nike, and Target.

In 2003, Michael headed west to work for Apple's in-house graphic design group. He helped launch a wide range of Apple products and services, from the iTunes Music Store, to Apple’s entire lineup of hardware and software products. Working in house, he was able to see a product launch through all of the various disciplines in the studio: retail, channel, packaging, web, motion graphics, film and video.

Michael’s background in design and art direction have helped shape his photographic style. He is a minimalist and always leans towards the idea of 'less is more'. He strives to make an emotional connection with his subject, and create images that transport you to another place. He tries to remain very versatile - shooting portraits, lifestyle, fashion, still-life, and wildlife.

Michael has helped co-found photography collective Tinker*Mobile. He has also co-founded and curated the 100-50-1 Photo Show. Michael is on the board of advisors for Stand and Maker. He is also a volunteer at Earthfire Institute. Michael spends his free time hiking, playing guitar, singing, and making eclectic playlists to capture his love of music. He lives in San Francisco with his best friend and co-pilot, Preston the Australian Shepherd.
